Beauty as transcendence
Beauty works like magic and the arts are sure tools for the tricks to work! When beauty touches man, it transcends him, that is, beauty makes him conscious of his own existence in some other dimension and transforms the ordinary in extra-ordinary.I am interested in exploring this power of transformation!I studied literature and languages because I never stopped wondering at the power of words.
Do the word 'spelling' and 'spell' have the same origin?
Could it be that using words is using magic?
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." John 1:1, King James' Bible.
I remember my sculptor Master, Karel Gomes, had his own turn:
“In the beginning was the Image and the Image was with God...”
But what would a musician say?
“In the beginning was the Sound and the Sound was with God...”
Again, no matter which sense is stimulated… Beauty must ‘talk’ about some other world!
I believe that by being involved with Art and Beauty means ‘heal’ man from his ordinary life, ordinary concerns but stay very real that is, no denying them but transforming them! Merely addressing the little story of ‘me’ is not enough (therapy, at most), I want to address the Supra-Man in such a convincing way that the viewer will feel and say ‘This is me!’ Not a ridiculous me, not a slave me, not a unworthy me, not a machine me but a Man with indeed small eyes or ears but who can see or hear immensities!…
Intention and meaning first.
The way I create a statue is simple and certainly not ‘modern’: I start with a meaning, and idea, an experience of universal value and I ask myself: How will it exist in ‘form’? “What “form” can self-esteem take? And courage or love? What posture will my body take when freedom is experienced? The experience must be true, deep and undeniable, not a 24/7… If true, 1 second is enough!I want my sculpture to convince man of his own extra-ordinary existence (the other, he knows too well!). I want to inspire and send the viewer to this place where the 2 worlds meet!
To serve Beauty, I use what I call Attention-Love.
Like the artist of the middle age or the Renaissance; I commit to excellence and refinement. I continue to learn the crafts, apply myself and spend all the time needed to achieve the most astonishing results. No product-ivism… No first-gesture alone… No letting go or giving up when meeting the difficult! The making of a statue like Amor Fati (1.5m), God Chasing You (1.5 meter) or Icarus (60 cm.) took up to a year
Icarus or Readiness is All!
Why is this myth so compelling to me since I never wanted to sculpt a flying Icarus and certainly not a falling one? The irresistibility lies in the ‘going for it'! I wanted to explore an Icarus-Ready or a Ready-Icarus. Almost an embodiment of Shakespeare’s words “Readiness is all!” His ambition equals his necessity: freedom! Escape the labyrinth in which his Father Daedalus, himself and the huge dirty secret of King Minos’s family (the Mino-taur) are trapped. The one who is ready to meet his needs can’t be stopped, can’t be slowed down or discouraged… And not because dangers are not known but because to submit to imprisonment is greater danger… Another title for this piece Honest Dialogue With Vulnerability. My Icarus is Man when he looks far... reaches, eye first, where he wants to be. My Icarus is Man saying: I am going to be free!
A woman dancing bare feet… I realized how revolutionary an “Esmeralda” can be when I read Victor Hugo’s novel Notre Dame de Paris. As I decided to sculpt an Esmeralda, I found essential to make sure that her dancing beauty was not understood as a giving herself away… I remembered how, when challenged to the extreme by a frightened society, she chooses physical death over conformity! As I sculpted her, bare feet, dancing with open legs and offered breasts (not nude though) her vitality is shared but not lost. Like the water in a fountain, it falls into itself, perpetually renewed, eternal!
Finding this theme so profound and rich, I decided to sculpt 2 more female figures dancing bare feet a series which I titled: Gypsy Girls.
Free Narcissus! As far as I know, the myth has always been approached from the tragedy view point. Punished by the Gods, the arrogant young man falls in love with his own image, suffers an impossible love and dies! I decided to sculpt a very unusual Narcissus. Lying down, his head energetically turned over his shoulder… His attention has been irresistibly diverted (did he hear something? He looks surprised) and, if only for 1 second, Narcisse is free! Free from his obsession, free from his con-damnation! A moment of truth which could be life changing…
Trusting Trust! AMOR FATI
In a moment of grief, I came to meet the ‘inevitable’ and from there I came to create a statue which could embody Love of Fate or, as I titled the piece Amor Fati. A garden piece, a female figure, as full as a fruit, partially nude (offered), partially draped (secret) holding in hand our planet earth. With the other hand, she seems to point at ‘something’ while her entire attention is on our planet. Is she about to touch the globe and distribute to man the circumstances and events they must encounter? I wanted her expression to be such that it would be impossible to conclude she is “with or against” anything. She must convey a sense of necessity going beyond human interpretation. When trust prevails, is it not true that all lives are equal? Though I must confess that, at times, my sadness at the death of a dear friend made me wish she knew shame and tears…
Amor Fati, 2 small reliefs
Amor Fati as The unnamed Lady
Up & Worthy
Leda. It is impossible not to stop and wonder at how, in the Greek myths, the gods seem to need to come close to the humans. Zeus, famously enough, can’t help it –it seems- and trans-forms himself into a golden rain (for Danäe), eagle (for Ganymede), swan (for Leda) and what not… Not only does he want to come close to the beauty he spotted but, when female, he systematically impregnates them… I concluded that I would sculpt a God- Chasing-You figure. Furthermore, to express how worthy the human must be, I decided that instead of sculpting a Zeus/Swan coming from above down to earth, I would have him coming from below, one foot on a lower base (world) and the other on this higher base (world) where Leda is lying. Determined, he appears ‘climbing’ towards her. His wings are large and rising, suggesting power and capacity to embrace. He does not touch her… for I wanted the focus to be entirely in the approach and its effects on her! The approach alone must be enough to wake her and her expression must not show legitimate fear and intense realization that something extra-ordinary is happening! God is chasing her!
I sculpt but shall I say I do magic?
Beauty has no choice... We do not sell sculptures, we sell heritage, legacy, a way of leaving, in other words, an object reflecting who you beleive yourself to be. We are not in the sculpture business... We are in the business of excellence and exclusivity.
In our quest for distinction, expanding skills and highest possible standards, we meet and welcome extra efforts, we push beyond any common limits and couragiously, we establish and honour extraordinary standards. This is how creating 1 or 2 pieces a year can become a valid goal for, each creation is allowed to receive all the attention its deserves. Between 900 hours for an interior bronze, 2000 hours for a garden peice and an illimited amount of serious work and craft for a monumental statue. But above all qualities, we cherish our capacity to establish an extraordinary relationship You, commissioners and customers.
We follow a code of conduct which, we trust, must inspire and attract the leading edge of You, Art Lovers, visionaries of the manifested world !
Power of intention
Attending one's own hair, putting a neck lace on or a drop of perfume, those activities will be as trivial or meaningful as we want them to be.
5 lines symbol
It resumes well the human condition, the laws he is under as well as his possiblities.
Man’s ordinary life on earth unfolds along 3 horizontal lines which represent its material existence, common thoughts, emotions and automatic inner and outer movements of the body.
To symbolize Man’s extra-ordinary possibilities and powers, 2 vertical lines cut through and rise. The first represents higher emotions such as true love and the second higher thoughts such as creative imagination.
Where those lines meet and cross each, man is offered the possibility to ‘sense’ the existence of another ‘world’ he is part of and belongs to. Those crossing -points literally work as gates… Linear time has no longer a meaning and our sense of existing in space is not confined to the skin of the body…
